Work hard, play hard! As someone who has always been a student, I am also a huge advocate for taking the time to take a break and have fun! Whether you are a new graduate (shout out to the class of 2021), know a graduate, or plan to be a graduate, this time of the year is special for many. It is our regularly scheduled summer break! It has been a LONG school year, so it is okay to take some time off to just relax. I have had many students share their excitement about their upcoming plans, and I look forward to hearing even more once they return in the fall. For now, as the world is opening up more fully to the public, I hope that everyone continues to be safe and take care of themselves as they bask in the sun and enjoy the fresh air around us.
So far this summer GEAR UP has been busy! We held four 2-day summer programs, two in Pahrump and two in Las Vegas for our graduating 8th and 12th grade students. We have also been releasing weekly videos on #CollegeKnowledge. Coming soon, we will be adding videos about our institutions from current and past First Year College Advisors. In July the UNLV virtual STEM camp begins, where 39 GEAR UP students will be learning about coding, the environment, and math. Also, our First Year College Advisors are preparing to welcome incoming first-year students at our Nevada institutions, as the school year will be here before we know it!
Speaking of the school year, can you believe that in less than two months another academic year will begin?!? I know I can’t! We are planning more college corners, a bunch of workshops, and new opportunities for all of our students. Not to mention working on getting you all more swag, of course! We are excited and have so much in the works to better service both our *NEW* and returning students (*hint on a cool announcement coming soon*).
But honestly, let’s not even think about that right now – let’s enjoy the moment and the break! You all have worked so hard over the last year, now it’s time to have some fun! ¡Pura vida mae!
Siempre,
Your Fav GEAR UP College Coordinator,
Jana Burd (Miss Jana)
