Jerome VickersFor August, our blog will be a Top 5 Insights for Incoming College Freshmen. As summer winds down, students are getting ready to head off to campus. This month, Jerome Vickers, GEAR UP First Year College Advisor at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), shares insights on how to make a smooth transition to college.

Starting college is an exciting adventure, but adjusting to a completely new routine takes time. As a college advisor, I want to share five tips to help you get off to a great start:
1. There Are No Bells
You’ve spent K–12 rushing to class before the bell rings and counting the minutes until the final bell. In college, there are no bells, so you’ll often have large blocks of free time between classes. Learning to manage that time helps you build habits you’ll use in the workplace, where you’re expected to manage your own schedule and show up on time.
2. Learn the “Why” Behind the Assignment
In high school, homework is often about earning points or checking a box. In college, assignments are designed to help you engage more deeply with the material. If your goal is simply to finish the work, you may miss the purpose behind it. Focus on understanding the “why” behind each assignment and studying becomes more meaningful.
3. Build Skills While in College
College is a great place to strengthen your critical thinking, time management, writing, and communication abilities. These practical skills will benefit you no matter which career path you choose. As you explore new interests, check whether courses you enjoy can also count as electives toward your degree.
4. It’s on the Syllabus
In high school, teachers often remind you about homework, quizzes, and upcoming deadlines. College professors typically won’t. Instead, they’ll provide a syllabus on the first day of class that outlines assignments, exams, and important dates. Knowing what’s ahead allows you to plan your time effectively and stay on top of your coursework.
5. Get to Know Your Campus
Balancing your academics and social life is easier when you’re familiar with your surroundings. During your first week, explore campus by locating the library, academic support center, fitness center, and other student resources. Attend campus events and get comfortable with the layout, so your transition to college is as smooth as possible.
Remember, adjusting to college takes time—use your resources, ask questions, and enjoy the experience.
