One again, we are featuring a staff interview instead of a regular blog post. This month our interviewee is Meshanna Merrow, GEAR UP Specialist at Mineral County High School. Read about Meshanna below!
What is your favorite GEAR UP service to plan and participate in?
The College and Career Fair that’s held in the spring is my favorite. Getting to bring everyone together in one place to show the students how many people are interested in helping them further their lives makes my heart sing.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live and why?
I would live in the middle of the desert, on a homestead with lots of animals and a huge garden. I am such and introvert and love animals and nature so much, it seems like the perfect fit for me.
Have you run into or heard from any of your former GEAR UP students from the last grant? If so, what was that like and how are they doing?
I have! It is always really cool to see past students. Everyone that I’ve talked to is doing really well, and is on their own path to success.
What was the last show you binge watched?
I’m in the middle of bingeing SEAL Team right now.
What do you think you most successful GEAR UP event has been (either this grant or the last one)? Why do you think it was successful?
The College and Career Fair that I put together is probably my most successful event. It has run through both grants, and was a total accident being put on my plate all those years ago, but I had so much fun taking it and running with it, that I refused to give it back after that first year. Watching it grow under the last grant, and it coming back so successfully last year was really amazing! I think it’s been successful because I don’t know how to take no for an answer. I just keep trying and finding new ways to make things work. I have invited some really huge names year after year, and in the last grant was able to actually pull a few in! I am hopeful to be able to do some of that again in this grant.
Give us a fun fact about Meshanna!
I grew up stock car racing, and was rookie of the year my first year missing points champion by 10 points. I still don’t know how to do much with my hair or makeup, but give me a stock car and I am in my element!
Thank you, Meshanna for being our interviewee this month!
