Jairon Castellanos BoteoThis month, our blog was written by First Year College Advisor at TMCC, Jairon Castellanos-Boteo. Read below and find out what are his “Top 5 Skills” that he wants to learn!

As someone who considers himself a lifelong learner, I have always believed that education does not end when you leave the classroom. It continues every time you pick up a new interest, challenge yourself with something unfamiliar, or commit to developing a skill simply because it excites you. That belief has shaped my personal journey, and it’s also a major reason why I work in education and with the GEAR UP program because I want students to see learning as something that can open doors for the rest of their lives.

When I think about the next steps in my own learning journey, there are five skills that rise to the top. Each one reflects a mix of personal curiosity, professional growth, and the desire to model for our students what it looks like to stay hungry for knowledge.

1. Cybersecurity
Technology touches nearly every part of our work and lives, and cybersecurity has always been an area that fascinates me. I want to learn how systems are protected, how cyber threats work, and how everyday users, especially students can stay safe online. Professionally, I see cybersecurity skills becoming more important every year. Personally, it is a field where I could see myself working in the future. The constant problem-solving and critical-thinking aspects make it something I truly want to master.

2. Coding and Programming
Coding has always felt like a superpower one that allows you to build ideas from scratch. Whether it’s understanding how software is created or learning a language like Python or JavaScript, I want to unlock the creative and analytical skills that come with programming. This has been on my list for years, and it aligns with the growing importance of tech literacy for students. As someone who has already pursued extra learning, like earning my real estate certificate, I know how transformative it can be when you finally take the leap into something new.

3. 3D Printing and Model Making
This is a hobby skill that sparks my imagination. There is something incredible about designing an object digitally and then watching it come to life layer by layer. Whether it’s making small models, prototypes, or art pieces, 3D printing feels like the perfect combination of creativity and technology. It’s also a skill I could use to inspire students showing them how design thinking, engineering, and innovation come together in a hands-on way.

4. Photography
Photography is a hobby I’ve wanted to grow in for years. I love the idea of being able to capture powerful moments whether traveling, working with students, or just documenting everyday life. Learning photography would allow me to slow down, pay attention to detail, and express creativity in a different medium. It’s a skill that blends technical understanding with storytelling, something I value both personally and professionally.

5. Automotive Certifications
Cars have always been a personal interest of mine, and earning automotive certifications is something I would love to pursue. Understanding how engines work, learning diagnostic skills, and being able to maintain or repair vehicles feels both practical and fulfilling. It connects back to my belief in hands-on learning and exploring hobbies that make life more interesting and self-sufficient.

My hope is that students see that even as adults, we grow the most when we stay open to new skills and new challenges. Whether it’s cybersecurity, coding, photography, or anything else that sparks your interest, the important part is taking the first step and believing that learning is something you carry with you for life.
