Thirty students from Washoe County School District GEAR UP took time from their winter break to visit the University of Nevada, Reno and explore STEM careers. Our students met UNR research students in the College of Agriculture Biotechnology and Natural Resources, explored research projects having to do with farm raised tilapia, and hydroponics. The students were also given the opportunity to talk to other STEM high school student programs on campus, giving them more opportunities to explore college and career opportunities in preparation for life after high school. Our GEAR UP students were also able to begin construction of VEX robots. Unfortunately the camp was cut short due to the flooding and winter storm warnings, but the students are very interested in continuing the building of their robots, to eventually compete in a robotics course. So stay tuned!
